Yellow cabs, as we know them today, began in 1915 when Albert Rockwell, founder of the Yellow Cab Company, introduced a fleet of yellow cabs to New York. The choice of the color yellow was based on a university study that showed that yellow was the most remotely visible color.
In the 1930s, the cab market in New York was regulated to curb the high competition and overcrowding of cabs on the streets. This led to the issuance of the so-called "medallions," permits that gave permission to operate as cabs. The number of medallions has remained virtually unchanged since then, making them very valuable.
Over the years, New York's yellow cabs have gone through many changes, ranging from the type and brand of cars used to the implementation of technology such as GPS and credit card readers. However, they have always retained their distinctive yellow color.
Today, despite the rise of rideshare apps such as Uber and Lyft, yellow cabs remain an iconic symbol of New York and are still a common form of transportation in the city.
